Psychoanalysis and Politics

A dialogue between ISPSO President Dr. Simon Western, the founders of Room, Dr. Hattie Myers and Mafe Izaguirre, and the audienceThis event will explore how psychoanalysis’ unique capacity to understand individual and societal change implicates it as a political force. Simon writes ‘Organizations are eco-systems within eco-systems’ thus they can no-longer be seen as closed-systems, separated from the environmental, technological and social-political challenges around them. His widely published research drawing on critical theory and psychoanalysis, explores leadership beyond authoritarian approaches.

Hattie and Mafe established Room: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action, an online magazine, in response to an unsettling and turbulent political reality. It is devoted to maintaining connections to ourselves and to our community through writing, art, and activism—disciplines that share a capacity to uncover the ‘hard to reach’ corners of our humanity with psychoanalysis. Hattie is  training and supervising analyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR) and Mafe is a Venezuelan, New York-based visual artist and graphic designer.
